Review: ENTER. Opening Party at Space Ibiza

The black dot and the black clad people were back for 2014 which means only one thing in Ibiza. Richie Hawtin and the ENTER. crew are returning for another club boundary pushing season of events in the futuristic surrounds of Space. Having completed two seasons and firmly cementing themselves into the premier echelon of club nights the techno heavyweights are back in an attempt to take our sensory systems to the limit once again. Tweaking the marketing campaign to use the djs eyes the as focal point of the huge billboards was a cool move and got me guessing what else this savvy team had in store.

Arriving early to make sure I got to taste the early vibe and the Sake that was being served up in the sunset terrace I was greeted by a very healthy dance floor for what is considered early in proceedings around here. The reason, floppy fringed creative Hawtin was dropping his first set of the season and indeed the night on the ENTER. crowd, adding to the experience and in turn the whole ethos for the event. Not happy with just entertaining the clubbers with cutting edge sounds Richie’s idea behind the night is born from his love for music, technology and Japanese culture. This was more than evident throughout the cavernous main room and smaller spaces like “El Salon” that had been transformed into an ambient cave allowing a quick recharge before the techno beat onslaught. You may even be lucky enough to be served by the main man at the Sake Bar as has been frequently known.

Later in the evening after milling all through the venue to take in the interactive installations and accompany music we landed in the terrace to witness what was for me the set of the nights from Tale of Us. The Berlin based and Italian raised duo laid down an epic emotional ride that tweaked your emotions and moved your feet in equal parts. Finishing up with the one of the summers big vocal bombs Sailor and I, ‘Turn around’ they set the scene perfectly for the heavy sounds that were to follow.

Maceo Plex was up next and he teased the crowd with a Sasha-esque intro teasing the crowd for just as long as was bearable before smashing in a slab of thick techno kick and finally nestling into a less abrasive tech house groove. He worked his way through techno and tech house with ease including his own aptly name ‘Conjure Balearia and his remix of Gus Gus – ‘Crossfade’, a tune that seems to be following me around the island. Not that I mind with a breakdown like that a some bass sounds that you can’t help but screw up your face too, a serious production.

I then had to drag myself away from this immense musical submersion to take in the main room and of course the man of the dot, Richie Hawtin. He was in full swing when I entered and the awe inspiring room was bouncing with energy, the crowd all fully engaged and taking in the sermon from the preacher in his DJ pulpit. This room has its own special place on the island with certain residents like Hawtin, Carl Cox and others in the control seat it can really go to the next level on certain special nights. This was one of those.

You can tell people care about the detail in this night and I can safely say that the ENTER. experience is one that I will be recommending whole heartedly.
