In an Ibizan party week in summer Tuesday is the day normally reserved for Carl Cox at Space. With a great Tuesday gig at Flex Vienna for the ‘Nachteule’ event series Cox now proved that his biorhythm in spring is still fully tuned to party on the second day of the week: Over 150 minutes of techno made it worth the effort of many turning up to work with red eyes on Wednesday.
Playing his first ever club-gig in Austria Carl Cox fulfilled the birthday wish of his friend Philip Straub, a Viennese DJ and via his TITAN agency also first adress when it comes to booking big techno and house acts to venues in Austria and its neighboring countries. Other well-known guests of honour for this public birthday party included Oliver Huntemann, Marco Bailey, Tom Novy and Felix Kröcher, who were also seen on the turntables for short improvised sets on the club’s second floor which added to the party’s easygoing vibe.
Kicking things off proper birthday boy Straub aka DJ Felipe teamped up with friend and German techno wizard Oliver Huntemann. Their back 2 back session was a dark fit of throbbing and reduced underground techno which matched the club’s charisma perfectly and proved very early why Flex’ sound system is still revered as one of Europe’s very best. Vienna is not a city known for crowded clubs during the week but the reputation of the headliner filled Flex early and catered for a carefree and freaky party atmosphere, no matter the dreaded working day looming ahead.
A cheerful Carl Cox started his set at around 1.30AM with housey vibes and the odd crowd pleaser from the last summer months. Never having set a foot in Flex before, Vienna’s probably best known club, Cox then quickly proved his class and experience by sensitively picking up the venue’s and crowd’s vibes to create a unique, well-tailored techno set that is the magic of an evening with Carl Cox. Cleverly managing the mood and balancing euphoria with darker, more introverted moments Cox played us like a piano! As if caught in a Time Tunnel it was scary how quick the minutes passed between countless hands-up moments, friendly faces, drinks and Cox’ obligatory ‘ohyes ohyes’ shouts!
Last Tuesday proved that for class acts and good music Austrias music lovers can be counted on for putting up an excessive party no matter the day or work stress. NACHTEULE (meaning ‘night owl’) will continue bringing top techno/house acts to Flex every second Tuesday of the month with the German grande dame of techno Monika Kruse on May 13th.
