When a perfectionist like Richie Hawtin does something, he does it right. So ironically the most eagerly awaited line-up of the summer was the very last to be released. Some prodigious parties like Circoloco, Cocoon or We Love had already started into the summer when ENTER. line-ups were finally published.
Responding to the frustration of many of his Facebook friends, Hawtin promised that “it’ll be worth the wait” – and boy, he was right!
ENTER. is Richie Hawtin’s party at Space Ibiza. In his second season starting on Thursday, July 4th, he now has full command over all of Space’ floors as the Kehakuma party on the terrace has moved to Saturdays.
Every floor will have its own concept and Hawtin is very keen on producing a distinct feel in every room. “It’s easy to hit someone over the head by putting a new decoration inside”, Hawtin tells us, “but to create a continuous, positive feeling it’s the deeper foundation of details and small things that people perhaps don’t even notice.”
Though having had very little time for preparation, ENTER. in 2012 was an instant success. Hawtin’s ideas and vision resonated and the party’s icon, the black dot, has sprung up all over the island. It soon became hip to be associated with Hawtin’s new project.
He himself has a last look over all things concerning the party, whether it be flyers and art work, artists, lighting, decoration and even what drinks to offer at the bar. This season at ENTER. Space’ legendary sunset terrace will be turned into a genuine Japanese Sake bar to allow revered artists like Luciano, Dubfire and Hawtin himself play quality warm-up sets in a unique setting, with people sipping the Japanese rice wine in its pure form or in exotic cocktails.
“When I’m involved in something, I’m fully committed”, says Richie Hawtin, even to the point where we saw him standing at the bar and offering Sake tastings to guests.
Going different ways in promotion as well his foray to Salinas beach last summer has gone down in history. Having produced special speakers to play while floating in the sea, he and his promotion team of pretty ladies and handsome blokes danced in the shallow waters at Las Salinas for everyone on the beach to see, and invited them to Space later on. A picture of the scenery taken from above became quite popular on the social media.
With expectations high it will be interesting to see how ENTER. can evolve to stay ahead of the game and continue being the buzz of the season. Music of course will be most crucial in this endeavor and all looks set to be an impressive second summer.
Apart from Richie’s own riveting and also technologically interesting sets we will see all of his MINUS artists again: Ambivalent, Hobo, Barem and John Gaiser will appear, some of them exclusively for ENTER. Matador returns to Space as probably the greatest shooting star of the MINUS label last summer.
In a clever move Hawtin has also secured himself two of the most popular stars of the underground scene as residents: Spanish Paco Osuna and Maya Jane Coles from London will play several dates during this summer.
Barcelona born Osuna has already played on the island for many summers and released a number of tracks on Hawtin’s Plus8 label.
Maya Jane Coles on the other hand has become one of the most sought after DJs in Ibiza after having appeared on the scene only in 2010 with her breakthrough track “What they say”.
She describes having played at ENTER.’s Sake bar in September 2012 as her “favourite gig of the year”, so it was a no-brainer to play for the brand again. And with her new album coming out this summer we have to fear no shortage of memorable tracks to play.
ENTER. 2013 looks great on paper. Now turn up those speakers and bring on some Sake-fuelled mayhem. We’ve waited long enough!
ENTER. @ Space every Thursday from July 4th to September 26th.
