In a few short years Ibiza new kid Ushuaia has managed to cement itself not only into clubbing folklore but also barge its way into the cramped opening party schedule with massive fan fare. Squeezed into an opening party weekend with Space and Dc10 the huge open air venue has stamped it mark on clubbers worldwide and turns Playa d’en Bossa streets into a scene from the pied piper as thousands headed to its entrance for a sensory overload of epic proportions.
2014 season was no different with a cosmopolitan crowd with various excited voices to be heard in the huge snake like queue that had developed in the early afternoon sun. Even the impending chance of rain was not dampening the spirits as they flooded into the huge expanse to be greeted by walls of bass and smiling faces. If the large number in early attendance was anything to go by this party was going to be started very soon with no need for warm up djs or a slow build. The already assembled dance floor massive were already grooving away and baying for rhythmic blood!
First off the rank was Tapesh followed by Los Suruba who dropped the Maetrik remix of Tiga Vs Audions remix of Fever to a sea of air punching. This perfectly crafted piece of audio from the man who can also be called Maceo Plex really tested the Ushuaia sound system and when the results were in it was a Perfect A+ for the sound student.
Uner followed and though the rain did eventually fall it managed to clear for the veteran melody man DJ Sasha to play one of his trademark long dreamy introductions before the kick drum pounded back in and we were back on our journey of beats.
One thing that stands out when visiting Ibiza and indeed Ushuaia itself is the insane production values that are put into the shows. From state of the art sound systems to meticulous planning of sensory enduing ice cannons and confetti bombs, these are just the tip of a impressive venues ice burg and were in full effect for the opening. Spectacular white stilted up lit robots walked amongst the crowd as a classic Prince cut was played, as well as the beautiful tones of strings of life accompanying what can only be described as six foot models cyber robots gyrated high above the crowd. Only in Ibiza and thats why they come in their thousands. Its more than the music, its a carnival, a festival of sights and sound!
As the party ticked into its 8th hour there were no signs of the usual midnight closure and Deetron took to the decks with a beautiful Stevie Wonder sample plundering edit of Superstition. He upped the tempo and as the uncharacteristically chilly Ibizan evening kicked in clubbers lapped up the musical warmth as he spilled house and tech over the gathered mass in front of him. Then UK jock Nic Fanciulli was up next and delivered smooth rolling beats before the Berlin superstar Paul Kalkbrenner took to the crescent shaped stage to finish off this marathon day to kick off Ushuaia season.
A line was drawn in the Playa d’en Bossa sand that day summer 2014 is looking to be another monumental season for the new kid on the block if this party is anything to go by!
