A club that’s won more awards than any other in the world, a club that’s helped make the careers of some of the biggest and best artists in the world, a club that distinguishes itself as an institution on an island full of clubbing institutions, and has the biggest and most sought after opening party on the island. This is Space Ibiza.
2012 was a year of change on the island, with more new acts and nights than anyone can remember. For some of the island’s bastions, it meant a slight dip in attendance. For Carl Cox and The Revolution Recruits, it meant their biggest year yet. With record attendance and sets by the likes of Joris Voorn, Nicole Moudaber and a back-to-back set by Cox and Loco Dice for the closing party, it was the night to rule them all.
The new kid on the block, figuratively speaking, was Richie Hawtin’s ENTER. In its first year, it was possibly the most forward thinking night around. ENTER. provided the White Isle with its first ever sake bar, located in El Salon, while simultaneously hosting a pre-party in that very room – innovative is an understatement. Clubbers sipped tobacco infused sake while Maya Jane Coles warmed things up – all before midnight. While Hawtin and ENTER. pushed the boundaries of sight and taste, Sundays at We Love… consistently pushed the boundaries of sound. The first to bring UK Bass to the island with a back-to-back set by Paul Wolford and Ben UFO, and life altering performances by the Innervisions crew, We Love… prides itself on musical mind-expansion.
So this year, have no doubt Cox will return with the thunder, ENTER. with the mystery and We Love… with the funk. But with such an out-of-the-box lineup, and more rooms than a rap star’s crib, 2013 is on tap to be not just another wild and hedonistic summer, but also one full of surprise and wonderment.
